Root

Tree roots anchor the tree, absorb water and nutrients, and interact closely with soil conditions, nearby structures, and surrounding plants. Understanding root systems helps homeowners recognise issues like shallow growth, girdling roots, root damage, and soil stress before they become larger tree health or safety concerns. Roots extend far beyond the visible canopy — often two to three times the canopy radius — and operate in a zone that is easily disrupted by construction, paving, and poor drainage. This collection covers root biology, root-related structural damage, drain pipe intrusion, and practical removal options.

Reference Notes

  • Most absorbing roots grow in the upper soil layers where oxygen and moisture are most available.
  • Root spread often extends beyond the visible canopy.
  • Girdling roots can slowly strangle a tree over decades without visible above-ground symptoms.
