Particle Board

Particle board is an engineered wood product manufactured from wood chips, sawmill shavings, and sawdust bonded with a synthetic resin under heat and pressure. It represents one of the primary industrial applications for processed wood waste, including material generated by woodchipping operations. Understanding particle board — its composition, properties, limitations, and manufacturing process — provides context for how tree removal debris enters the wood products supply chain. This collection covers particle board composition, manufacturing, structural properties, environmental considerations, common applications, and how it compares to other engineered wood products.

Reference Notes

  • Particle board is the world's most widely produced wood-based panel product, used extensively in flat-pack furniture manufacturing.
  • The formaldehyde content of particle board resin has been a significant environmental health concern — low-emission CARB Phase 2 compliant boards are now standard in the US.
  • Particle board has lower structural strength than plywood or OSB and is not suitable for load-bearing applications or exposure to moisture.
